Western Digital Caviar Black

Maximum performance

Dual processor technology, up to 64 MB cache and SATA 3 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s interface takes everything we know about 7200 RPM performance and turns it on its ear.

No compromises

High performance, high capacity, best-in-class reliability, and cutting edge technology make up WD Caviar Black, the ideal drive for those who demand only the best.

Award winning

This 7200 RPM speedster is at the top of its class when it comes to performance and reliability benchmarks.

High Performance Electronics Architecture

Dual processor - Twice the processing power to maximize performance.

Colossal cache - Bigger, faster cache of up to 64 MB means faster performance.

Interface - WD Caviar Black hard drives are offered with a SATA 6 Gb/s or a SATA 3 Gb/s interface.

Rock Solid Mechanical Architecture

Dual actuator technology - A head positioning system with two actuators that improves positional accuracy over the data track(s). The primary actuator provides coarse displacement using conventional electromagnetic actuator principles. The secondary actuator uses piezoelectric motion to fine tune the head positioning to a higher degree of accuracy. (1.5 TB and 2 TB only)

StableTrac - The motor shaft is secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking, during read and write operations. (1.5 TB and 2 TB only) View demo

NoTouch ramp load technology - The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection in transit.
Massive Capacity

WD Caviar Black SATA drives are available in capacities up to 2 TB.

Compatible

We perform tests on hundreds of systems and a multitude of platforms in our FIT Lab and Mobile Compatibility Lab to give our customers confidence that our drives will work in their systems.

Ideal for:

Power computing applications such as multimedia, video and photo editing, and maxed out gaming computers.

Desktop / Consumer RAID Environments - WD Caviar Black Hard Drives are tested and recommended for use in consumer-type RAID applications. (RAID-0 / RAID-1)*

Figures represent the average number of photos taken with a 6 megapixel camera in high-resolution JPEG mode with an average file size of 3.5 MB per photo. The actual number of images will vary by camera model and compression setting.

The DV format, regardless of its mode (miniDV, DVCAM, DVC-Pro) has a data rate of approximately 25mb/s (mega-bits per second). In storage terms, this translates to approximately 3.5MB/s (Megabytes per second) or 13GB/hr (Gigabytes per hour)

Music capacity is based on 4 minutes per song. MP3 capacity is based on 128 kbps bit rate and 11:1 audio compression ratio. Uncompressed CD quality is based on 1:1 audio compression ratio.

Mouse over each item to see how it was calculated.

Examples of the number of photos, songs, videos and any other files that can be stored on a hard drive are provided for illustrative purposes only. Your results will vary based on file size and format, settings, features, software and other factors.

1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending on operating environment.
